BOOM (Self Portrait)

BOOM is a self portrait of my state of mind at times. I am expressing the universal angst we mortals feel when the mind goes BOOM. These past two years going on three have tested humans. As for myself sanity, sanctuary and humor are my most pressing goals.

The "Ghost" in the machine represents all of us who rage against the machine and are the hope for a better world for all the inhabitants of this glorious planet we call home.

My process, I start by sitting in front of a computer screen staring. When the inertia lifts I pick up my mouse and start to paint freehand. At times I paint with my eyes closed in the automatic painting style of the Surrealists. Sometimes like the French artist Andre Masson 1896–1987 who used pen and paper, I let my mouse travel rapidly across my work table without conscious control of what I am creating on the screen creating, "Automatic Drawings". Other times my movements are very calculated and mathematical.  Some of my paintings take over 100 hours to complete. For me digital painting is akin to being in front of an easel except no toxic chemicals are involved.

Venus 2020

Venus 2020

60” x 34”

This painting is an homage to the earliest known sculpture of a human being. It was found in the Hohle Fel Cave in southern Germany. The sculpture is 35,000 years old. It depicts a female with exaggerated breasts, stomach, thighs, vulva and has no head. In lieu of a head there was a ring so the piece could be worn as a pendant. I found it facinating that a woman was chosen as the subject. It gives credence to the fact that the first societies were Matriarchies. Maybe it’s time for history to repeat itself. Women ruling our planet again.

Metamorphosis Of An Orb

Metamorphosis Of An Orb

72” x 61” Digital Painting

I am an artist in search of the universal bonds that connect all sentient beings in the universe. In Metamorphosis of an Orb we are witnessing the ancient, the primal, and the tribal. Where did the idea come from to create objects, dwellings and sacred spaces in the shape of three dimensional orbs or two dimensional circles? Was it from seeing the full moon or the sun? Maybe a raindrop hitting the water and creating circular patterns. Metamorphosis of an Orb is Homage to our collective past. Harking us back to the origins of our terrestrial ancestors and stirring up the universal consciousness stored inside of us all. In this painting we are witnessing a moment in the transition of an object. Is it becoming an orb or is the orb becoming something else. Is this creation or transmutation? It is for the viewer to decide and continue the conversation.

Gum Ball Machine

Gum Ball Machine

60” x 60”

Was thinking about my childhood today and remembering happy times like Eddie's candy store in the Bronx NY. It was on the corner and I would pass it every day on my way to and from school. The store was a gathering spot for the neighborhood. The place to buy magazines, newspapers, coffee, soda pop and ice cream. It also had a public phone, very handy if you didn't have one at home. One of the highlights of my day was when I put a penny in the gumball machine and the RED gumball came out. It was hot cinnamon my favorite. I was an easy kid to make happy skipping all the way home chewing my red hot gum.

Homage to the Prometheus Tree

Homage to the Prometheus Tree

48" x 48"

Series: "THINK"

The tree, called Prometheus, took root at the dawn of the Bronze Age, centuries before the ancient Egyptians began construction on the pyramids at Giza. It outlasted the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, European colonialism, the Mexican-American War and the creation of the atom bomb. But it didn't survive the chainsaw that felled it on Aug. 7, 1964, at the request of a scientist who wanted to study the tree's rings.

Black Holes and Gravitational Waves

Black Holes and Gravitational Waves

48" x 48"

Series: "THINK"

Gravitational waves were predicted by Albert Einstein in 1918, as part of his theory of general relativity. Finding them would confirm a big part of that theory and would also be the first step toward a new way of observing the cosmos. Black holes and neutron stars are too dim to be seen by modern telescopes, but researchers might be able to measure the gravitational waves they produce.

On the 100 anniversary of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, scientists say they have proven the existence of gravitational waves the ripples in space-time that stem from objects moving throughout the Universe. This is a major scientific break through.

This digital painting is part of the, "Other Worlds" series which reference my lifetime fascination with exploring the infinite possibilities of parallel universes and what their worlds and the beings that populate them might look like. I'll always remember reading the Dr Zeus book, "Horton Hears a Who" to my daughter Kim and thinking this is how I see myself, an incalculably minute being living on a spinning orb in the middle of unfathomable darkness in the vastness of space. As a child I often wondered why I never fell off, that was before I learned about gravity. My hopes are that the viewers of this series might themselves be inspired to ponder the infinite possibilities afforded to all sentient beings and wonder who's out there and what are they doing.

In the upper right corner of this painting there is an inscription. The earliest authenticated library, that of the Pharaoh Ramses ll, in the second millennium before our era, bore this inscription over its portals designating it as “the house of healing for the soul”. I have always thought this was a thoughtful, truthful way to describe a library.
